UsingAigaion/Topics

< UsingAigaion

One of the two main mechanisms for annotating and structuring your Aigaion bibliography is the topic tree.

The topic tree is used to organize your bibliography in themes and topics, where a publication can be added to any number of topics that are relevant to it.

Example

This is what the topic tree looks like. In an actual topic tree, you click on a topic name to read its description and find the list of publications that are attached to it. A paper can be attached to multiple topics! If you want to find for example the publications that are part of two or more topics, you can use the search interface from the menu.

Topic Tree

Assigning a publication to topics

To assign one publication to certain topics, go to the edit page of the publication and click on the link 'categorize publication' (near the header 'topics'). To do this you need to have the user right 'publication_edit', and you need to have edit access to this particular publication.

To assign a list of publications to certain topics, add those publications to the bookmark list, then go to 'My bookmarks' (from the menu) and use the bookmark list interface to add all publications in the list to a certain topic. (Or remove them from a topic. Or create a new topic containing exactly the publications on the bookmark list.) To do this you need to have the user rights 'publication_edit' and 'bookmarklist', and you can only change publications in this way for which you have edit access.

Subscribing for topics

It may be that not every user of a certain Aigaion database is interested in exactly the same topics. Therefore Aigaion contains a mechanism that allows you to subscribe to - or unsubscribe from - any topic, meaning that you can determine which topics you will see while browsing the system. By default, a new user will not be subscribed to any topic. To review which topics already exist in an installation of Aigaion, go to the topic review page and subscribe to any topic that you are interested in. Those topics will then appear in your topic tree.
