Process
I still need to put up documentation about the translation process, but for now, the following points.
- translation is done using gettext's .po, .mo and .pot files
- the "master template" resides in internationalisation/messages.pot
- editing a translation is very simple: install poEdit, load the correct "messages.po", select "catalog->update catalog from .pot file" (using the above master file), edit the translations, save everything.
- translations of old AIgaion versions are not always maintained, but if they are, they can be found under internationalisation/Aigaion<version>
- When a translation is complete for a certain release version, you can release a language pack on sourceforge.
General discussion of the translations and translation processes in Aigaion go in this forum board; specifics of a certain language go in the board of that language.
For coordinators:
Coordinators can request moderator rights on their language-specific board. They are kindly invited to keep up-to-date the information about their translation on the appropriate wiki pages (see below)
release
releasing new language packs for a certain release of Aigaion:
prepare a zip file with the following contents (example for Dutch):
nl/
/readme.txt
/LC_MESSAGES/
/messages.mo
The zip file should be named:
languagepack_<languagename>_<aigaion_version>_<translationversion>
For Dutch, Aigaion release 2.1.2, third version of the translation, this would be:
languagepack_nederlands_2_1_2_c.zip
Then this zip file should be added to the appropriate release package on sourceforge.
For end users:
If there are issues with the translation in a certain language, raise them on the board of that language.
For (would-be) translators:
- if you want to join in the translation for a certain language that is already in Aigaion, ask about it in the board of that language. The coordinators for that language will know more.
- if you want to start/coordinate a new language, announce it in the 'new languages' board, and possibly find people there to help
- if you are starting a new language, request Dennis or Wietse to prepare a new board for it.
- if you need moderation rights for your language board, ask us, or have the coordinator of your language ask us.
- names of all current and past contributors to a certain language go on the Aigaion wiki
- information on available versions of translations go on the Aigaion wiki
- when you find problems in the English terms, please note them on ModifyingAigaion/Internationalisation/English
New languages that have been started up need to be added to the wiki, too. Name the page according to the basic pattern ModifyingAigaion/Internationalisation/LanguageName; start with the content that you find at ModifyingAigaion/Internationalisation/TemplateForNewLanguage
Currently available languages
A list of all currently available translations. We might consider building them into a table, with columns for : link to forum board, names of coordinators, link to wiki page for that language, all versions for which it exists (one column per version, with color indicating amount of translatedness?), ...
